India's EV Market Hits Record Highs in FY26

India's Electric Vehicle Market Achieves Historic Milestones Amid Global Challenges

Despite concerns over headwinds from the West Asia war impacting the auto sector, India's electric vehicle (EV) market has soared to unprecedented heights. The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) emerged as a landmark period, with battery-powered vehicles across all segments posting robust growth, while March 2026 recorded historic peak sales for both electric two-wheelers and cars.

Record Growth Defies GST Rate Cuts

This remarkable expansion occurred even as a GST rate reduction for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles narrowed price gaps. In FY26, total volumes of battery-powered vehicles surged by 23% to 2.43 million units, up from 1.97 million units in FY25, according to Vahan data. Penetration of these vehicles increased to 6.5% from 6.1%, indicating a growing consumer shift towards sustainable mobility.

Electric Two-Wheelers Lead the Charge

Electric two-wheelers (E2Ws) remained the primary driver of volumes, with registrations rising to 1.39 million units in FY26, a 21% increase from 1.15 million units in FY25. Key players in this segment included:

  • Ola Electric experienced a decline to 1.64 lakh units from 3.44 lakh units.

Other notable contributors included Greaves, River Mobility, Pur Energy, and Kinetic Green.

Electric Passenger Vehicles Show Sharp Surge

Electric passenger vehicles (EPVs), encompassing e-cars and e-SUVs, nearly doubled their volumes, reaching 1.97 lakh units in FY26 compared to 1.08 lakh units in FY25. Penetration in this category jumped to 4.2% from 2.6%. Leading manufacturers were:

  • Tata remained the leader with about 77,400 units.
  • JSW MG Motor followed with 52,500 units.
  • Mahindra recorded over 39,800 units.
  • Hyundai occupied the fourth position with over 5,820 registrations.
  • BYD and VinFast sold over 5,300 and about 2,325 units, respectively.

March 2026 Sets New Benchmarks

March 2026 witnessed historic volumes for battery-powered vehicles, with total EV registrations hitting a new peak of 2.61 lakh units. E2Ws and EPVs reported their highest-ever monthly figures at 1.79 lakh units and over 19,700 units, respectively. Additionally, electric three-wheeler volumes grew to 8.27 lakh units in FY26 from 6.99 lakh units in FY25, further underscoring the sector's vitality.

This growth trajectory highlights India's accelerating transition to electric mobility, driven by consumer adoption and competitive market dynamics, even in the face of economic and geopolitical challenges.
