The historic Indian Diamond Institute (IDI) in Surat has entered a new era of modern education and training for the gems and jewellery sector. On Tuesday, the institute inaugurated a comprehensive infrastructure upgrade, valued at Rs 1.50 crore, funded entirely by donations from the city's diamond and jewellery businesses.
A Legacy Institute Gets a Modern Makeover
The renovation of the 47-year-old institute was officially unveiled by Rajya Sabha MP Govind Dholakia. The project, supported by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, has transformed key facilities to meet contemporary global standards. The initiative began two years ago when industry leaders were approached to contribute from their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds.
IDI chairman Dinesh Navadiya highlighted the collaborative effort. "The donation initiative began with Govind Dholakia and was supported by industry leaders and IDI alumni," he said during the inauguration ceremony. The goal was clear: to provide improved facilities for students from India and abroad.
Key Upgraded Facilities and New Launches
The inauguration marked the launch of several state-of-the-art departments. The modernized infrastructure now includes:
- A fully upgraded gem testing laboratory.
- A renovated auditorium and administrative office.
- Improved hostel facilities for students.
- An advanced CAD (Computer-Aided Design) jewellery division.
- A manual jewellery designing unit.
- A polished diamond grading department.
A significant highlight was the unveiling of newly designed IDI gem testing laboratory certificates. These certificates, which now feature the Government of India's national emblem, the Ashoka Pillar, will be issued for:
- Natural diamond jewellery.
- Lab-grown diamond jewellery.
- Loose diamonds (both natural and lab-grown).
- Coloured stones.
Boosting Skills for a Global Industry
Speaking at the event, Govind Dholakia emphasized that the infusion of new technology and improved infrastructure would help attract more students and significantly benefit the entire gems and jewellery industry. IDI executive director Sameer Joshi recounted the institute's pivotal role since its inception in May 1978.
"The institute began to provide skill development and training for diamond industry artisans. Jewellery courses were introduced in 1992–93, and IDI continues to supply trained manpower to the diamond and jewellery industry," Joshi stated. The latest upgrades ensure that this legacy of supplying skilled professionals is strengthened with cutting-edge tools and learning environments.
The transformation of IDI Surat stands as a testament to the industry's commitment to nurturing future talent. With these enhanced facilities, the institute is poised to remain a cornerstone of excellence for the global gems and jewellery trade for decades to come.
