Gucchi Mushroom Priced at Rs 35,000 per Kg Becomes Star Attraction at MSME Conference in Kanpur
An innovation and start-ups stall featuring the rare Gucchi mushroom, priced at an astonishing Rs 35,000 per kilogram, emerged as the center of attention at the MSME Entrepreneurship Conference held in Kanpur. This exotic mushroom, which naturally grows in the Himalayan hills, was displayed by entrepreneur Santosh Rai from Faridabad, drawing significant interest from attendees.
Entrepreneur Showcases Diverse Mushroom Varieties with Medicinal Benefits
Santosh Rai's stall presented more than 10 different varieties of mushrooms, including the highly regarded Shiitake mushroom, renowned for its anti-cancer properties. Rai, who underwent specialized training in mushroom production, initiated his business venture in 2018 with a modest investment ranging between Rs 50,000 and Rs 60,000. Over the past eight years, his enterprise has experienced remarkable growth, achieving an annual turnover of approximately Rs 50 to 60 lakh.
Currently, Rai generates an income of around Rs 1 lakh per month and provides employment to about 10 individuals. The majority of his mushroom produce is exported to European countries, where demand for such premium products remains consistently high.
Challenges and Future Prospects for High-Value Mushroom Market in India
Rai highlighted the challenges associated with the Gucchi mushroom, noting that its steep price in India, currently at Rs 35,000 per kg, limits local demand. He expressed optimism that if the price could be reduced to between Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000 per kg, domestic consumption would likely increase. To address this, Rai is collaborating with scientists to develop a more affordable variety of the mushroom.
He explained that the Gucchi mushroom's high cost is primarily due to the difficulty in foraging it and its substantial global demand, making it one of the world's most expensive mushrooms. Additionally, these mushrooms are prized for their medicinal properties, as they are nutrient-dense and contain high levels of vitamin D, iron, copper, and zinc. These nutrients are known to support immunity and promote heart health, further enhancing their value in the market.
The MSME Entrepreneurship Conference served as a platform for showcasing such innovative agricultural products, emphasizing the potential for entrepreneurship in niche sectors like high-value mushroom cultivation.
