Goa's GI-Tagged Harmal Chilli Revival: Mapping Cultivation Areas After 5 Years

Nearly five years after Goa's renowned Harmal chilli received the prestigious geographical indication (GI) tag in 2020, fresh and concerted efforts are now underway to map cultivation areas across the state. The primary objective is to reconnect with traditional farmers, aiming to revive and significantly expand the production of this unique agricultural product.

Preliminary Assessment in Pernem Taluka

Agriculture department officials have confirmed that a preliminary assessment is currently in progress across Pernem taluka, with particular focus on the areas in and around Arambol. This region is historically and culturally associated with the cultivation of the distinctive Harmal chilli.

"Over the years, many farmers have abandoned chilli cultivation due to various challenges," stated an official. "We are systematically identifying areas where cultivation remains viable and reaching out to two key groups: farmers who continue to grow the crop and those who may be willing to resume cultivation after a hiatus."

Strategic Support from Nabard

The revival project is being executed with crucial support from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard). The bank is actively assisting in the critical tasks of farmer identification and strategic planning for the next phase of agricultural intervention.

Officials elaborated that the comprehensive survey will serve multiple purposes:

  • Determining the exact extent of land currently under Harmal chilli cultivation.
  • Assessing resource gaps and infrastructural deficiencies.
  • Understanding the precise level of support required to scale up production sustainably.

Exploring Infrastructure and Support Measures

While traditional seeds are already available with the existing farming community, the government is exploring additional support mechanisms to incentivize commercial cultivation. These potential measures include:

  1. Enhancing irrigation facilities to ensure consistent water supply.
  2. Providing fencing to protect crops from wildlife and encroachment.
  3. Developing other necessary agricultural infrastructure.

"This initiative is currently in its primary stage," the official added. "Once the survey data is compiled and analyzed, we will engage in detailed discussions with stakeholders to understand their specific requirements. Based on this, we will extend all necessary support to facilitate a successful revival."

Leveraging the GI Tag for Marketing

On the marketing and branding front, separate and coordinated efforts are being planned to fully leverage the GI tag. The aim is to create a strong brand identity for Goa's Harmal chilli, enhancing its market value and ensuring better returns for farmers. This strategic branding initiative is expected to run parallel to the cultivation revival efforts, creating a holistic ecosystem for the crop's sustainable future.
