GMDA Demolition Drive Frees 1.6km Stretch in Gurgaon for Traffic and Development
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) executed a rigorous two-day demolition drive to clear illegal encroachments along the dividing road between Sectors 46 and 51 in Gurgaon. This operation successfully liberated a 1.6-kilometer stretch, which is now available for enhanced traffic movement and planned infrastructure work. The cleared area serves as a critical link to Sohna Road and experiences heavy daily traffic, particularly used by residents from nearby colonies such as Ardee City, Mayfield Garden, and Nirvana Country.
Enforcement Action and Removal Details
Led by RS Batth, the District Town Planner (DTP) and nodal officer for encroachment at GMDA, the drive involved the authority's enforcement wing, supported by approximately 20 police personnel and two JCB machines to ensure the smooth removal of illegal structures. The encroachments, primarily consisting of temporary shanties, had spread across nearly 800 meters on both sides of the road, significantly narrowing the carriageway and disrupting traffic flow. This illegal occupation also obstructed planned infrastructure projects and routine maintenance activities.
Despite issuing two prior notices and conducting repeated site visits to encourage voluntary removal, the encroachments persisted, necessitating this enforcement action, as confirmed by an official statement. The proactive measures underscore GMDA's commitment to reclaiming public land and ensuring orderly urban development.
Planned Development and Future Initiatives
With the stretch now cleared, officials have outlined plans for its development. RS Batth announced that a green belt is proposed along the corridor, accompanied by a service road designed to alleviate congestion and improve connectivity. This initiative is part of a broader, ongoing effort to reclaim public land across Gurgaon. Similar demolition drives have been previously conducted at locations such as Rajiv Chowk, Medicity Road, and green belts in Sector 47.
Authorities have emphasized that action against illegal occupation will continue, with all reclaimed land being allocated for planned uses to benefit the community. This drive not only addresses immediate traffic concerns but also paves the way for sustainable urban infrastructure, enhancing the quality of life for residents in the region.
