Dwarka Expressway Fire: Unregistered Plastic Unit Engulfed in Flames
A major fire erupted at an unregistered plastic manufacturing unit located on the Dwarka Expressway in Gurugram on Tuesday. The blaze, which started in the early hours of the morning, quickly spread across the facility, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the sky. Fire tenders from nearby stations were dispatched immediately, but they faced significant difficulties in reaching the site due to narrow access roads and heavy traffic congestion on the expressway.
Firefighting Efforts Hampered by Accessibility Issues
According to officials, the fire department received an emergency call around 4:30 AM. At least six fire tenders were pressed into service. However, the units struggled to navigate the last stretch to the factory because of the narrow lanes and parked vehicles. Firefighters had to lay long hoses from the main road to the blaze, causing delays in controlling the fire. No casualties were reported as the unit was closed at the time of the incident, but the property was completely gutted.
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Preliminary investigations suggest a short circuit may have triggered the blaze. The plastic unit was reportedly operating without proper registration or fire safety clearances, raising questions about enforcement of regulations in the area. Local residents expressed concern over the recurring fire incidents in industrial pockets along the expressway.
Authorities Initiate Investigation
Gurugram police and fire department officials have launched a joint inquiry into the incident. The owner of the unit has been identified and will be questioned. Authorities are also checking if nearby factories comply with safety norms. The fire was brought under control after nearly three hours of effort. Cooling operations continued for several more hours to prevent re-ignition.
This incident highlights the vulnerability of unregulated industrial units and the challenges faced by emergency services in rapidly urbanizing areas. Civic bodies have been urged to conduct regular inspections and ensure that all industrial facilities adhere to safety standards.
