Major Disruption at Mumbai's CSMT: Platforms 16 and 17 to Remain Closed for 85 Days

In a significant development affecting rail commuters in Mumbai, Central Railway has announced the suspension of train operations from platforms 16 and 17 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) for a period of 85 days, starting from February 1 and continuing until April 26, 2024. This extended closure is necessitated by redevelopment-related traffic and power blocks, as confirmed by railway authorities on Friday.

Infrastructure Upgrade Drives Temporary Shutdown

The temporary shutdown is part of the ambitious CSMT redevelopment project being executed by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA). The blocks are essential to facilitate foundational and allied construction works on the two platforms, which are critical components of the station's infrastructure. Railway officials have emphasized that the platforms will only be reopened for traffic operations after the completion of all scheduled works, ensuring safety and enhanced facilities for passengers.

Impact on Long-Distance Train Services

As a direct consequence of this closure, several long-distance trains that typically terminate at CSMT will be short-terminated until further notice. This measure is aimed at minimizing disruption while allowing the redevelopment work to proceed unhindered. The following trains will be affected:

  • Amravati–CSMT Express (12112) – short-terminated at Dadar
  • Ballarshah–CSMT Nandigram Express (11002) – short-terminated at Dadar
  • Howrah–CSMT Express (12810) – short-terminated at Dadar
  • Bhubaneswar–CSMT Konark Express (11020) – short-terminated at Dadar
  • Bidar–CSMT Express (22144) / Latur–CSMT Express (22108) – short-terminated at Dadar
  • Madgaon–CSMT Tejas Express (22120) – short-terminated at Dadar
  • Mangaluru–CSMT Express (12134) – short-terminated at Thane

Passengers are strongly advised to plan their journeys accordingly during this period of restricted operations, as these changes may affect travel schedules and connectivity.

Details of the CSMT Redevelopment Project

The redevelopment of CSMT is a massive infrastructure undertaking, being executed by Ahluwalia Contracts Limited, with the plan receiving approval from Central Railway on December 19, 2022. The project involves a total investment of Rs 2,450 crore and covers an expansive area of 461,534 square metres. Key components of the project include:

  • New construction spanning 279,507 square metres
  • Renovation of 130,912 square metres of existing structures
  • Development of 37,703 square metres of open area adjacent to the terminus
  • Additional constructions covering 13,412 square metres

Enhanced Passenger Amenities and Safety Measures

Upon completion, the redeveloped CSMT will offer significantly improved passenger amenities, designed to enhance the overall travel experience. The project includes:

  • Construction of dedicated buildings for passenger facilities and parcel services
  • Development of decks to seamlessly connect mail/express and local trains
  • Installation of footbridges and skywalks for better accessibility
  • Reservation of open spaces near the main heritage building exclusively for passengers, aimed at ensuring smooth crowd management
  • Construction of a perimeter wall to prevent unauthorized entry and enhance security

Railway authorities have reiterated that while the temporary closure may cause inconvenience, it is a necessary step towards modernizing one of India's busiest railway terminals. Passengers are encouraged to stay updated with official announcements and adjust their travel plans to accommodate these changes during the 85-day period.
