In a significant development for Kerala's industrial and scientific landscape, the state government has initiated the construction of a major new research and manufacturing facility. Industries Minister P Rajeeve laid the foundation stone for the Centre for Research on Molecular and Applied Sciences (CRMAS) centre at the Bio 360 Life Sciences Park in Thiruvananthapuram.
A Strategic Leap for Kerala's Biomedical Ambitions
Minister P Rajeeve described the project as a crucial milestone in the state's strategic plan to position itself as a frontrunner in the biomedical and life sciences industry. The new facility is not just an infrastructure addition but a cornerstone for fostering innovation and high-value economic activity. The minister emphasized that this initiative aligns with the government's vision to transform Kerala into a knowledge-based economy by leveraging its strengths in education and healthcare.
The CRMAS centre is designed to span approximately 15,800 square feet. This space will be meticulously divided to serve dual, synergistic purposes. A substantial portion, about 8,600 square feet, will be dedicated to housing world-class translational research laboratories. The remaining 6,000 square feet will be allocated for the manufacturing of Ayush products, creating a direct pipeline from research to commercial production.
Cutting-Edge Research and Collaborative Synergies
Dr. Rajesh Ramachandran, Director of CRMAS, outlined the ambitious scientific agenda for the new centre. The facility will enable advanced research in several frontier areas, including:
- Innovative disease modelling systems to better understand and treat complex illnesses.
- Studies in neuronal stimulation, which could have implications for neurological disorders.
- Research into cardiac remodelling, aiming for breakthroughs in heart disease treatment.
A key differentiator for CRMAS is its established network of collaborations with premier national institutions. The organisation actively works with the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), various Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), and National Institutes of Technology (NITs). This collaborative model is intended to pool expertise and accelerate innovation.
Dr. Ramachandran stressed that the ultimate goal is to evolve CRMAS into a robust translational research hub. This involves a unique integration of traditional knowledge systems like Ayurveda with modern biomaterials research. By fostering global scientific partnerships, the centre aims to deliver tangible, application-oriented outcomes that can have a real-world impact on healthcare.
Economic and Employment Impact
The project is set to provide a major fillip to the local economy, particularly in the high-skill job sector. Minister Rajeeve confirmed that the new CRMAS facility is expected to generate over 100 high-skilled employment opportunities. These positions will cater to scientists, researchers, lab technicians, and manufacturing specialists, contributing to brain gain and retaining talent within the state.
The establishment of this centre within the Bio 360 Life Sciences Park further strengthens the park's ecosystem.
