Bengaluru Auto Drivers Confront Severe LPG Price and Supply Crisis
Auto-rickshaw drivers in Bengaluru are facing an escalating crisis as the cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) surges dramatically, coupled with a sharp decline in supply. This dual challenge is severely impacting their livelihoods and daily operations across the city.
Government Bunks Offer Minimal Relief Amidst Long Queues
While government-operated fuel stations, such as Hindustan Petroleum (HP) and Bharat Petroleum, provide LPG at marginally lower rates—approximately Rs 77 to Rs 78 per kilogram—the relief is limited. These bunks are plagued by extensive queues and restricted stock availability, forcing drivers to endure long waits with no guarantee of securing fuel.
The situation has created a ripple effect, with many auto drivers struggling to meet their daily earnings targets. The increased operational costs due to higher LPG prices are squeezing their profit margins, making it difficult to sustain their businesses.
Supply Shortages Exacerbate the Struggle
Beyond the price hike, the dwindling supply of LPG has become a critical issue. Reports indicate that stock levels at various distribution points are insufficient to meet the demand, leading to frequent shortages. This scarcity forces drivers to travel longer distances in search of fuel, further increasing their expenses and reducing their working hours.
Local auto driver associations have expressed deep concern over the ongoing crisis. They highlight that the combination of rising costs and unreliable supply is pushing many drivers to the brink, with some considering alternative livelihoods if the situation does not improve soon.
Impact on Public Transport and Daily Commuters
The crisis is not only affecting auto drivers but also impacting public transport in Bengaluru. With fewer autos available or operating at higher fares to offset costs, daily commuters are facing increased inconvenience and expenses. This has sparked calls for immediate intervention from authorities to stabilize LPG prices and ensure adequate supply.
As the city grapples with this fuel crisis, stakeholders are urging for swift action to support the auto-rickshaw community and maintain the smooth functioning of urban mobility in Bengaluru.
