India's aviation sector is set for a fresh wave of competition as the government clears the path for new carriers to enter the skies. This move aims to break the dominance of major players and enhance connectivity across the country.
Ministry Greenlights Three New Aviation Players
The Union Civil Aviation Ministry has issued crucial no-objection certificates (NOCs) to three aspiring airlines: Shankh Air, Al Hind Air, and FlyExpress. Announcing this significant development, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu stated on social media platform X that while Shankh Air had previously received its NOC, Al Hind Air and FlyExpress were granted theirs this week.
The minister emphasized the ministry's focus on encouraging more airlines in one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets. He highlighted that government schemes like UDAN have already enabled smaller carriers such as Star Air and Fly91 to improve regional connectivity, and there remains substantial scope for further growth.
This clearance is widely seen as a strategic response to concerns over a market duopoly, following recent disruptions and the overwhelming presence of IndiGo and the Air India group.
AlHind Air: A Kerala-Based Challenger with Regional Ambitions
Among the newly cleared carriers, AlHind Air stands out as a regional commuter airline initiative from the established Kerala-based Al Hind Group, a major name in travel and tourism. The airline plans to launch operations later this year.
AlHind Air will begin its journey with ATR 72-600 turboprop aircraft, focusing on providing smooth and hassle-free domestic travel. The carrier will be based in Cochin, using Kochi International Airport Limited as its primary hub and leveraging Kerala's extensive airport network to strengthen regional links.
With its NOC secured, the airline is now progressing through the regulatory process to obtain the final Air Operator Certificate (AOC), which is mandatory before commencing commercial flights.
The Visionary Behind AlHind Air
The driving force behind this new aviation venture is Mohammed Haris Thattarathil, a Director and Chairman-level leader within the Al Hind Group. A native of Calicut (Kozhikode), Haris holds degrees in History, Economics, and Pharmacology.
Under his leadership, the Alhind business transformed from a local Kerala ticketing agent in the early 1990s into a global travel entity with over 100 offices worldwide and a strong presence in the Gulf region. He is described as the principal promoter and the strategic mind leading the group's ambitious foray into aviation.
What This Means for Indian Travelers
The entry of new airlines like AlHind Air signals a positive shift for passengers. As domestic air travel demand surges, flyers can anticipate better connectivity, more competitive fares, and improved service options on regional routes.
The expansion aligns with the government's goal of deepening regional connectivity and fostering a more competitive and resilient domestic aviation market, offering travelers more choices beyond the established giants.
