AIDA Advocates for Ethanol-Based Cooking Solutions to Enhance India's Energy Resilience

PILIBHIT: In a significant move to bolster India's energy independence, the All India Distillers' Association (AIDA) has formally proposed the adoption of ethanol-based domestic energy pathways as a viable alternative to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). This initiative comes in response to growing concerns over the nation's heavy reliance on imported fuels, particularly amid ongoing geopolitical disruptions in the Gulf region that threaten stable supply chains.

Official Communication to Petroleum Ministry

AIDA President Vijendra Singh has dispatched a detailed letter to the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, strongly urging the government to develop and implement strategic policies that actively promote ethanol for household energy consumption. The primary objective of this proposal is to strengthen India's energy resilience and substantially reduce dependence on imported fuels during periods of global instability and market volatility.

In his correspondence addressed to Petroleum Secretary Neeraj Mittal, Singh highlighted the robust production capabilities of the domestic distilling industry. He noted that the sector currently possesses an annual production capacity of 2,000 crore litres of ethanol, with plans to scale this up to an impressive 2,400 crore litres by the fiscal year 2026-27.

Addressing Supply Challenges and Environmental Concerns

According to AIDA's assessment, this substantial ethanol production capacity can ensure a stable and reliable supply for alternative domestic applications, effectively serving as a strategic buffer against unpredictable global supply disruptions. Singh emphasized the practical challenges faced by consumers, stating, "Erratic LPG supplies have led to the prioritization of household consumption, while commercial users continue to face significant constraints. Our dependence on a single imported clean cooking fuel underscores the urgent need to diversify our national energy mix."

He further elaborated that ethanol-based cooking solutions offer multiple advantages, including reduced import dependence and cleaner combustion with lower particulate emissions. This transition could play a crucial role in curbing indoor air pollution, which remains a serious public health concern across many Indian households.

Economic and Agricultural Benefits

Singh pointed out that utilizing hydrous ethanol would avoid the additional costs associated with dehydration processes, potentially making it more economical than commercial LPG for end-users. Moreover, decentralized production models could support and strengthen regional energy systems, enhancing local self-sufficiency.

Such ethanol-based solutions would be suitable not only for household use but also for small commercial applications. Importantly, this shift could generate substantial benefits for the agricultural sector by increasing demand for key feedstocks such as rice, maize, and sugarcane, thereby providing farmers with additional income opportunities and market stability.

Addressing potential technical limitations, Singh acknowledged that ethanol has a lower calorific value compared to LPG. However, he expressed confidence that advancements in stove design, optimized burners, and efficient fuel delivery systems can effectively bridge this performance gap, making ethanol a practical and efficient cooking fuel for everyday use.

In his concluding remarks, Singh urged the ministry to develop a comprehensive policy and regulatory framework for the phased adoption of ethanol as a mainstream cooking fuel. This framework should include stringent safety protocols, quality assurance standards, and performance benchmarks specifically tailored for ethanol cookstoves, ensuring user safety and optimal functionality.
