Adani Green Energy crosses 20 GW operational renewable capacity

Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has crossed the 20-gigawatt (GW) mark in operational renewable energy capacity, according to a company statement. The achievement is largely driven by greenfield development, with the company now generating over 52 billion units of clean electricity annually.

Massive clean electricity output

This annual output represents nearly 3 per cent of India's total electricity consumption, enough to power New York City for a year or supply the combined needs of Mumbai and New Delhi, the statement noted. In financial year 2026 alone, AGEL added 5,051 megawatts (MW) of capacity, marking India's largest and fastest renewable energy expansion to date.

Portfolio composition and storage

AGEL's operational portfolio includes approximately 14.2 GW of solar capacity, 2.7 GW of wind capacity, and 3.3 GW of wind-solar hybrid capacity. Additionally, the company has commissioned 3.55 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to support round-the-clock clean power.

The milestone was announced following the inaugural Adani Green Energy Dialogue held on June 26 during London Climate Action Week at The Science Museum in London. At the event, AGEL emphasised the need to accelerate electrification by integrating renewable energy with large-scale storage to enhance energy security, improve affordability, and ensure reliable clean power supply.

Rapid greenfield expansion

The company's first renewable energy project was commissioned at Kamuthi, Tamil Nadu, in 2016. The 20 GW milestone was reached within a decade, making it India's largest and fastest greenfield renewable capacity addition, the statement said.

Sagar Adani, Executive Director of AGEL, commented: "Surpassing 20 GW demonstrates what disciplined execution and long-term vision can achieve. Today, AGEL, along with our efficient team and longstanding partners, delivers renewable electricity almost equivalent to annual power requirement of Mumbai and New Delhi combined, reinforcing the country's energy security while accelerating its clean energy transition."

Khavda: world's largest renewable project

The centrepiece of AGEL's next growth phase is the Khavda project in Kutch, Gujarat, which hosts the world's largest renewable energy plant. Spanning 538 square kilometres of barren land, the project has a planned capacity of 30 GW. Its area is five times the size of Paris and nearly equivalent to Mumbai. AGEL has already commissioned 9.5 GW of solar capacity at the site, accounting for over 30 per cent of the planned total capacity, as per the release.
