Punjab Taxation Department Recovers Rs 1,137.8 Crore in Major Anti-Evasion Drive
In a significant development, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema announced on Monday that the state's taxation department has successfully recovered a substantial sum of Rs 1,137.8 crore during the financial year 2025-26. This recovery is part of an intensified crackdown on tax evasion, which the minister described as marking a sharp rise in enforcement activities and revenue realization for the state.
Penalties Imposed and Recovery Details
According to an official statement released by Cheema, the department imposed total penalties amounting to Rs 1,383.1 crore over the course of the year. Out of this hefty amount, more than Rs 1,137 crore has already been recovered, showcasing the effectiveness of the enforcement measures. The minister emphasized that this performance reflects a robust approach to tackling tax fraud and ensuring compliance.
Key Drivers of Enforcement Success
The recovery efforts were primarily driven by two main strategies:
- Inspection-Based Enforcement: This method accounted for the lion's share of the penalties, totaling Rs 1,215.9 crore, with recoveries of Rs 972.15 crore. It involved thorough checks and audits of businesses and entities to uncover discrepancies and evasion practices.
- Road Checking Operations: These operations contributed Rs 165.71 crore to the overall recovery, focusing on intercepting goods and verifying transactions during transit to prevent tax leakage.
Major Jump Over Previous Year
Cheema highlighted that the 2025-26 figures represent a dramatic increase compared to the previous financial year. In 2024-25, inspection-based actions had resulted in penalties of only Rs 147.3 crore and recoveries of Rs 41.53 crore, while road checking recoveries stood at Rs 157.1 crore. This year's performance, therefore, shows a transformational shift in the department's enforcement capabilities and outcomes.
Legal Actions and Fraud Exposures
As part of the crackdown, the taxation department registered eight FIRs and made 15 arrests during the year, underscoring the seriousness of the campaign. Cheema pointed out two major cases that were particularly noteworthy:
- These FIRs involved seven individuals and exposed fraudulent transactions worth a staggering Rs 385 crore.
- The investigations uncovered tax evasion of Rs 69.57 crore through firms that were allegedly issuing invoices without any actual supply of goods, a practice aimed at evading tax liabilities.
The minister's announcement signals a strengthened resolve by the Punjab government to combat tax evasion, boost state revenues, and ensure a fair taxation system. The substantial recoveries and legal actions taken are expected to serve as a deterrent to potential evaders in the future.
