Karnatak University in Dharwad has announced that it will collect Goods and Services Tax (GST) on affiliation fees from colleges, according to a circular issued by the College Development Council (CDC). The move is aimed at complying with tax regulations and ensuring timely payments.
Payment in Installments
Colleges have been directed to remit the affiliation fee along with the applicable GST in three installments. The first installment must be paid before the affiliation notification for the 2028–29 academic year is issued. The CDC circular emphasizes that non-compliance may delay the affiliation process.
Background
The decision comes as part of the university's effort to streamline financial procedures and adhere to statutory requirements. Previously, affiliation fees were collected without GST, but the new directive aligns with the broader tax framework.
University officials stated that the move will ensure transparency and avoid legal complications. Colleges have been urged to plan their finances accordingly to meet the payment deadlines.
This development is significant for affiliated colleges in the region, as it adds to their operational costs. However, the university maintains that the step is necessary for regulatory compliance.
