Himachal Imposes Rs 1 Per Unit Cess on Commercial Power

The Himachal Pradesh government has imposed an additional cess of Rs 1 per unit of electricity on commercial consumers under 10 categories across the state. As per a notification issued by the state's multipurpose projects and power department, the new levy will apply to commercial power consumption by establishments such as business houses, private offices, private hospitals, petrol pumps, hotels and motels, private nursing homes, private research institutes, private coaching institutes, shopping malls and multiplexes.

Details of the New Levy

The notification stated that these consumer categories have been brought under the ambit of Sub-section (1) of Section 3-B of the Himachal Pradesh Electricity (Duty) Act, 2009. With this move, all consumers falling under the notified categories will have to pay an additional Rs 1 per unit on electricity consumed to the state electricity board.

Impact on Commercial Establishments

This additional cess is expected to increase the operational costs for businesses operating in these categories. The state government aims to generate additional revenue through this levy, which will be used for various developmental projects and infrastructure improvements in the power sector.
