The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has commenced the distribution of property tax bills for the financial year 2026-27 to households in Salt Lake. Taxpayers who clear their dues within the stipulated deadlines will benefit from a 5% rebate on the current tax amount, excluding any outstanding arrears from previous years.
Penalties for Arrear Dues
For those who have not settled their arrear tax liabilities from the last financial year, a combined penalty of 10% and an additional 10% interest will be levied on the total arrear amount as of March 31. This measure aims to encourage timely payment and reduce the burden of accumulated dues.
Payment Options Available
Taxpayers can conveniently pay their property tax online by visiting the official website www.bmcwbgov.in. The portal accepts payments via debit cards, credit cards, net banking, and the Bharat Bill Payment System. Alternatively, physical payments can be made at designated bank branches within the BMC area between 11 am and 3 pm.
For those opting to pay by cheque, it must be deposited at least two working days before the due date to qualify for the rebate. The cheque should clearly mention the assessee number, holding number, bill number, quarter number, contact number, and email ID (if available) on the reverse side. If a cheque is not accepted for any reason, payment can be made in cash, subject to a clerical charge of Rs 250 per tax bill.
Increased Collection and New Taxpayers
BMC officials noted a significant 20% increase in property tax and mutation fee collection during the last financial year ending March 31. This growth is attributed to residents of wards 27 and 28, covering Mahisbathan and Nayapatti, who began paying property tax for the first time last year. Previously, these residents paid 'khajna' or land revenue to the local BLRO office. For the current financial year, BMC has set a revenue target of Rs 44 crore from property tax.
