Patna's Economic Experts and Traders Express Disappointment Over Union Budget 2026-27
Patna Experts, Traders Disappointed with Union Budget 2026

Economic experts and roadside traders in Patna have expressed widespread disappointment following the presentation of the ninth Union Budget in the Lok Sabha on Sunday. Across various sections of society, there is a clear consensus that Bihar failed to receive any "eye-catching" provisions or distinctive announcements specifically tailored to the state's needs.

Experts Highlight Lack of Bihar-Specific Focus

Former director of the A N Sinha Institute of Social Studies (ANSISS), D M Diwakar, pointed out that while Bihar will benefit from some statutory provisions and schemes like all other states and Union territories, there is no standout announcement for the state. "There is no Bihar-specific eye-catching point in the Budget," Diwakar stated, emphasizing the overall lack of distinctive measures.

Contrast with Previous Budgets

N K Chaudhary, former head of the economics department at Patna University, echoed this sentiment, noting the stark contrast with the previous Union Budget. "This time, there is nothing Bihar-specific for the people of the state. To that extent, it is very disappointing," Chaudhary said. He recalled that the 2025–26 Union Budget was often described as the "Bihar Budget" due to the numerous announcements made for the state, highlighting how the current budget falls short in comparison.

Political Considerations Behind Budget Allocations

Experts have linked the absence of Bihar-specific announcements to the lack of imminent elections in the state. Diwakar explained, "In the 2024-25 and 2025-26 Union Budgets, announcements for Bihar were eye-catching because elections were due. With that over, Bihar has been forgotten." He added that other regions appear to have gained based on political considerations, suggesting a shift in focus away from Bihar post-elections.

Reactions from the Ground

The disappointment is not limited to academic circles; roadside traders and common citizens in Patna have also voiced their concerns. Many feel that the budget offers little for the common man in Bihar, with no significant measures to address local economic challenges or boost development in the state.

Broader Implications for Bihar's Economy

The lack of Bihar-specific provisions in the Union Budget 2026-27 raises questions about the state's economic trajectory. Without targeted announcements, Bihar may struggle to address its unique developmental needs, potentially impacting growth and welfare programs. Experts warn that this oversight could hinder progress in key areas such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare, which require focused attention and funding.

As the budget presentation concluded after one hour and twenty-five minutes, the sentiment in Patna remains one of letdown, with hopes for future budgets to better address the state's priorities and contribute to its overall development.
