LPG Bookings Show Decline After Panic Buying Surge
LPG bookings across India have recorded a significant decline for the first time following several days of sharp increases driven by panic buying. According to the latest government data, approximately 77 lakh LPG bookings were registered on Saturday, marking a notable drop from the 88.8 lakh bookings observed on March 13. This shift indicates the initial signs of easing panic demand amidst the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has previously fueled concerns over fuel availability.
Government Assures Stable Fuel Supplies Amidst Concerns
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has issued a strong reassurance, stating that adequate stocks of petrol, diesel, and LPG are readily available across the nation. Officials have confirmed that refineries are operating at high capacity while maintaining sufficient crude inventories to ensure uninterrupted supply. No cases of fuel dry-outs have been reported at retail outlets or LPG distributorships, according to authorities, who are urging citizens to avoid panic buying and rely on official information channels for accurate updates.
Push for PNG Connections to Ease LPG Pressure
In a strategic move to alleviate pressure on LPG availability, the government has actively encouraged commercial consumers in major urban centers to transition to piped natural gas (PNG) connections. These connections are supplied through established city gas distribution networks, offering a more stable and efficient alternative. A review meeting was convened on March 14 with regulators and gas distribution companies to assess the current status of PNG connections and accelerate the conversion process from LPG to PNG, aiming to streamline demand and enhance supply resilience.
Enhanced Monitoring and Enforcement Measures
State governments have intensified their oversight of the fuel supply situation, with twenty-two states and Union Territories establishing dedicated control rooms to monitor the availability and distribution of petrol, diesel, and LPG. High-level meetings have been conducted to prevent panic booking and ensure continuity of supply. Enforcement agencies have ramped up actions against hoarding and black marketing, conducting raids in multiple states. Officials from public sector oil marketing companies are carrying out surprise inspections at LPG distributorships to curb irregularities and promote fair distribution practices.
Regulatory Adjustments and Supply Stabilization Efforts
Several states, including Bihar, Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan, have issued orders to regulate the allocation of non-domestic LPG cylinders in alignment with government guidelines. This measure prioritizes essential services and institutions to maintain operational stability. Concurrently, the government has introduced measures to stabilize supply and demand by rationalizing LPG refill booking intervals to 25 days in urban areas and up to 45 days in rural regions. Domestic LPG production from refineries has been maximized to boost availability, ensuring uninterrupted supply to households and priority sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions.
Digitalization and Future Outlook
Authorities have noted a rise in online LPG bookings, which now account for nearly 87 percent of total bookings, up from approximately 84 percent previously. This increase is attributed to oil marketing companies pushing digital platforms to streamline distribution and enhance efficiency. The government remains focused on maintaining robust fuel supplies despite disruptions in global energy markets due to the escalating conflict in West Asia, emphasizing that distribution networks are fully operational and capable of meeting demand.
