India's Domestic LPG Production Meets 60% of Demand Amid Global Energy Volatility
India's domestic LPG production has achieved a significant milestone, now fulfilling nearly 60% of the country's total requirements. This development offers substantial relief as the ongoing war in the Middle East continues to create ripples across global energy markets. With the conflict in Iran surpassing 40 days, authorities are actively implementing strategies to maintain stable fuel supplies nationwide.
Strategic Shift from LPG to PNG Accelerates
One of the key measures adopted by the Central government involves a strategic transition from LPG to PNG (Piped Natural Gas). In the past five weeks alone, more than four lakh consumers have made the switch. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on traditional LPG while ensuring households receive uninterrupted fuel access.
Detailing these advancements, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, stated on Friday that the expansion of PNG coverage is gaining momentum with robust support from state governments and Union Territories.
"In the last five weeks alone, around 4.05 lakh new LPG connections have been gasified, and over 4.41 lakh new consumers have been registered. Continuous support is also being received from state governments and Union Territory administrations, and it is expected that the expansion of the PNG network will accelerate further," Sharma emphasized.
Steady Supply and Commercial Recovery
Despite persistent geopolitical volatility, officials confirm that domestic LPG demand is being adequately met. Distributors currently hold sufficient stocks, with no shortages reported across the country. Commercial supplies, which faced strain earlier, have now recovered to nearly 70% of normal levels.
Essential services and industries continue to receive priority allocation. This includes hospitals, educational institutions, hotels, dhabas, pharmaceuticals, packaging units, and various labour-intensive sectors, ensuring critical operations remain unaffected.
Enhanced Access for Vulnerable Groups
Efforts to widen fuel access for vulnerable populations have been intensified. The supply of 5 kg LPG cylinders has been doubled, supported by relaxed documentation norms that have significantly boosted uptake.
"We have simplified access to 5 kg cylinders by easing documentation requirements and significantly increasing supply. As a result, nearly one lakh cylinders are being sold," Sharma added, highlighting the success of these measures.
Consumption Trends and Outreach Initiatives
Since March 14, commercial LPG sales have reached approximately 106,000 tonnes, with daily consumption stabilizing between 6,000 and 6,500 tonnes. To further improve consumer awareness and access, authorities have conducted over 2,400 awareness campaigns in the past week, educating the public about available fuel options.
Natural Gas and Industrial Allocations
In the natural gas segment, priority remains firmly on domestic consumption. Industries connected to the grid are currently receiving about 80% of their requirements, while supplies to the fertiliser sector have been restored to 95%.
City gas distribution companies have received strict instructions to maintain uninterrupted supply to critical areas, including food processing, cold storage, and healthcare facilities.
Robust Crude Oil and Refinery Operations
Officials further report that crude oil inventories remain adequate, with refineries operating at optimal levels. Additionally, approximately 800 tonnes per day of petroleum products are being allocated to pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries, supporting essential manufacturing activities and bolstering economic resilience.
