India tops global remittance charts with $137 billion in 2024

India’s diaspora, the largest in the world at approximately 19 million people, has propelled the country to the top of global remittance rankings for 2024. According to the World Migration Report 2026 released by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), India received a record $137.67 billion in remittances, making it the only nation to cross the $100 billion mark. This represents a significant increase from $111.22 billion in 2022 and $83.15 billion in 2020.

Remittance Growth Over the Years

The report highlights a sharp rise in remittance inflows to India over the past decade, from around $53 billion in 2010 to over $137 billion in 2024. This growth is attributed to strong earnings by Indian workers and professionals in key destinations such as the United States, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. In comparison, Mexico was the second-largest recipient in 2024 with $68 billion, followed by China with $48 billion.

India's Dominance in Migration Corridors

India’s remittance success is underpinned by its vast diaspora spread across the globe. The India-UAE corridor is the fifth-largest migration corridor in the world, with nearly 3.57 million Indians residing in the UAE. The India-USA corridor ranks sixth, with 2.9 million Indians, while the India-Saudi Arabia corridor hosts 2.59 million. Additionally, the United Kingdom is home to 1.8 million Indians.

While Gulf nations continue to employ millions of Indian workers in construction, services, and domestic work, the report emphasizes a rapid increase in high-skilled migration from India, particularly in technology, healthcare, engineering, and research sectors.

Global Migration Patterns

The report notes that the Mexico-to-United States corridor remains the largest in the world, with nearly 11 million people. However, India’s growing role in global migration flows is evident, spanning blue-collar workers in the Gulf, tech professionals in North America, and hundreds of thousands of students pursuing education overseas.
