Government Denies LPG Shortage, Emphasizes PNG Priority and Fuel Availability
The Indian government on Wednesday firmly stated that there is no shortage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in the country, while highlighting its commitment to prioritizing Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections. Officials also reassured the public about sufficient supplies of diesel and petrol, urging citizens to avoid panic buying amid growing concerns over fuel availability.
PNG and CNG Supply at Full Capacity
Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary (Marketing & Oil Refinery) at the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, emphasized that domestic PNG connections remain a top priority for the Government of India. "Domestic PNG connections are being supplied at 100% capacity, ensuring uninterrupted service to households," Sharma stated. She added that Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) used for transportation is also being made fully available to all consumers, with no disruptions reported in this sector.
Addressing Panic Buying and Fuel Refining Capacity
The government directly addressed recent incidents of panic buying observed at retail outlets and petrol pumps across many areas over the past two days. "We have witnessed long queues and panic buying in several regions, but we want to assure everyone that there is no shortage at any petrol pump," officials declared. They highlighted India's robust refining infrastructure, noting the capacity to process approximately 26 crore tons of crude oil annually, which supports adequate petrol and diesel availability nationwide.
Authorities explicitly urged people not to believe rumors and to refrain from panic purchasing. "There has been no increase in the price of petrol and diesel, and supplies remain stable," the government clarified, aiming to calm public anxiety.
LPG Distribution and Enforcement Measures
Regarding LPG distribution, the government confirmed that no shortages exist at any distributorship level, with online booking systems functioning effectively. Approximately 26 states have received allocations totaling 22,000 tons of commercial LPG, a distribution effort that spans the entire country. To prevent misuse and ensure fair distribution, both central and state governments have intensified enforcement actions.
"Yesterday alone, around 2,700 raids were conducted across various states, resulting in the seizure of approximately 2,000 cylinders," officials reported, demonstrating proactive measures to curb illegal activities.
Alternative Fuel Options and Clarifications
The government also outlined alternative fuel arrangements, noting that kerosene has been made available as a supplementary option. Additional allocations have been issued to approximately 16 states and union territories, providing an alternate fuel choice where needed.
Furthermore, the government dismissed reports suggesting changes to LPG refill booking timelines as entirely false. "The existing refill booking timelines remain unchanged and continue as before," authorities affirmed, ensuring transparency and consistency in service delivery.
This comprehensive reassurance from the government aims to stabilize public sentiment and maintain normalcy in fuel supply chains across India, emphasizing preparedness and adequate reserves to meet national demand.
