Waltair Railway Division Emerges as Top Performer in Indian Railways
The Waltair railway division, operating under the East Coast Railway, has achieved remarkable financial and operational milestones in the fiscal year 2025-26. Based in Visakhapatnam, the division has secured its position as the fifth-highest revenue-earning division across the entire Indian Railways network. This impressive ranking is complemented by its status as the fifth-highest in freight loading and the undisputed leader in incremental traffic growth, contributing an additional ₹1,600 crore to its earnings during this period.
Record-Breaking Financial and Operational Performance
The division reported total earnings of ₹11,598.07 crore, marking a substantial 17% increase compared to the previous fiscal year. A significant portion of this revenue, ₹10,422.56 crore, was generated from freight operations alone, reflecting an 18.75% growth. Divisional Railway Manager Lalith Bohra emphasized that this achievement underscores the division's robust performance across multiple revenue streams.
In terms of freight handling, the division surpassed all loading targets by moving 85.1 million tons of goods, a 17.25% rise from the previous year. This milestone represents the first time the division has achieved such a volume within a single financial year. Furthermore, the cumulative handling of goods exceeded 150 million tons, setting another unprecedented record for the division.
Passenger Traffic and Additional Revenue Streams
Passenger traffic also saw a significant uptick, with 33.42 million passengers utilizing the division's services, generating ₹881.37 crore in revenue. This figure is noted as the highest passenger revenue recorded in the past 21 years. Beyond core operations, the division demonstrated strong performance in ancillary areas such as catering, non-fare revenue, ticket checking, parking, and sundry income, contributing to its overall financial success.
Infrastructure Development and Environmental Recognition
The division has been proactive in enhancing its infrastructure and sustainability efforts. Budget allocations for railway projects in the region saw substantial increases, with Andhra Pradesh receiving ₹10,134 crore, Odisha ₹10,928 crore, and Chhattisgarh ₹7,470 crore. Key infrastructure projects included the development of new railway lines, construction of flyovers, station upgrades, and the selection of 15 stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Additionally, a new residential complex was inaugurated in Visakhapatnam to support staff welfare.
In a notable achievement for environmental stewardship, the Visakhapatnam railway station was awarded a platinum-rated Green Railway Station certification. The division's electric loco shed also received national recognition, highlighting its commitment to sustainable practices.
Technological Innovations and Service Enhancements
Embracing modern technology, the division introduced the AI-powered Rail Robocop "ASC ARJUN" for enhanced surveillance and passenger assistance. This innovative system successfully identified offenders using advanced facial recognition capabilities, improving security and operational efficiency. To accommodate increased demand during peak periods, the division operated more than 400 additional coaches and 300 special trains during festivals and vacations. Several weekly special services are now being regularized to provide consistent travel options.
Infrastructure improvements included the commissioning of major doubling works and over 380 kilometers of double line tracks, aimed at boosting capacity and reducing congestion. Foundation stones and inaugurations for projects worth ₹1,200 crore were laid by the Prime Minister, covering initiatives such as flyovers, station upgrades, and enhanced passenger amenities, further solidifying the division's growth trajectory.
