The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for the implementation of three major projects in the state, involving a total investment of Rs 18,600 crore. The agreement was formalized in the presence of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, marking the first industrial MoU signed since he assumed office.
Key Projects Under the MoU
Under the terms of the MoU, L&T will undertake the expansion of a data centre in Kancheepuram district, with an investment of Rs 15,000 crore. Additionally, the company will establish an electronics and electronic systems manufacturing facility in Coimbatore, entailing an investment of Rs 2,500 crore. The third project involves the expansion of the Kattupalli shipbuilding yard in Tiruvallur district, with an investment of Rs 1,100 crore.
Employment Generation
These three projects are expected to generate employment opportunities for approximately 8,200 people, contributing significantly to the state's economic growth.
Strategic Importance
In an official release, the state government stated that the MoU is a step towards achieving its goal of transforming Tamil Nadu into a $1.5-trillion economy by 2036. The investments are anticipated to strengthen Tamil Nadu's digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence ecosystem while boosting the state's electronics manufacturing base. The expansion of the Kattupalli shipyard is expected to create world-class infrastructure for the offshore wind energy sector.
