The Chennai division of Southern Railway is set to modernise four major goods sheds at Singaperumal Koil, Tada, Katpadi, and Korukkupet as part of its infrastructure modernisation plan for 2025-26. The initiative aims to strengthen freight movement and improve cargo handling efficiency across the region.
Infrastructure Upgrades to Support Industrial Growth
Railway officials stated that these projects are designed to support industrial growth, enhance supply chain movement, and improve freight operations. The upgrades will focus on loading, storage, and transport infrastructure at these key freight terminals.
At the Singaperumal Koil and Tada goods sheds, infrastructure works are already in progress to accommodate increasing automobile freight traffic. These projects include improvements to approach roads, circulation areas, and loading and storage facilities to facilitate smoother cargo movement.
Major Redevelopment at Korukkupet Goods Shed
The redevelopment of the Korukkupet goods shed is the largest among the projects, with an estimated cost of Rs 81.43 crore. The work involves laying new railway lines, developing truck parking facilities, installing cement concrete flooring, drainage systems, boundary walls, and improving road access.
Modernisation of Katpadi Goods Shed
The Katpadi goods shed will also undergo modernisation to improve the handling of commodities such as cement, fertilisers, and foodgrains, according to officials.
These upgrades are expected to significantly enhance the efficiency of freight operations in the Chennai division, supporting the region's economic growth.
