Indian Railways Announces 25% Hike in Kilometrage Allowance for Running Staff
Effective from January 2024, Indian Railways has implemented a significant 25% increase in the rates of Kilometrage Allowance and Allowance in lieu of Kilometrage (ALK) for all running staff across its extensive network. This move is set to positively impact more than two lakh railway personnel, including loco pilots, assistant loco pilots, firemen, guards, and other essential running staff who are crucial to daily operations.
Addressing Long-Standing Discontent
The decision comes in the wake of a recent hike in Dearness Allowance to 50%, which had already benefited other railway employees. However, the kilometrage allowance had remained unchanged for an extended period, leading to widespread dissatisfaction among the affected running staff. This issue was actively highlighted by organizations such as the All India Loco Running Staff Association and various railway federations, who advocated for fair compensation adjustments.
Official Statement on the Revision
In an official statement, Indian Railways emphasized that this revision aims to provide better compensation aligned with current Dearness Allowance levels. The statement noted, "The revision will benefit running staff across Indian Railways by ensuring better compensation aligned with the current Dearness Allowance levels. It reflects Indian Railways' continued commitment to the welfare and financial betterment of running staff, who form the backbone of its operations." This underscores the organization's dedication to supporting its workforce amidst evolving economic conditions.
Impact and Broader Context
The increase is expected to enhance the financial well-being of running staff, who play a vital role in maintaining the efficiency and safety of railway services. By addressing the allowance stagnation, Indian Railways aims to boost morale and ensure equitable treatment across all employee categories. This proactive step aligns with broader efforts to improve employee satisfaction and operational excellence within one of the world's largest railway systems.
