PMC to Appoint Contractors for Key Parking Lots After Complaints
PMC to Appoint Contractors for Key Parking Lots

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to appoint contractors at key parking lots on JM Road and dismantle some others following numerous complaints that various PMC-run facilities required major upgrades. Many regular commuters have also sought better monitoring at parking lots to curb fleecing and overcharging. Lack of maintenance, proper lighting, and broken staircases are among the major challenges at these civic body-run parking lots.

Contractor Appointment and Anti-Fleecing Measures

Officials from the PMC stated that the administration has initiated the process to appoint contractors at key parking lots. To prevent fleecing, specific instructions will be issued to all contractors to display charges at various locations inside the parking lot and at entry-exit points for the benefit of commuters, an official said.

Slow Development of New Parking Lots

Civic activists and sources from market areas have highlighted that the administration has been slow in developing new parking lots. Civic activist Vijay Kamble remarked, "They [PMC] should provide data on how many plots reserved for parking are fully developed. There is encroachment at many plots reserved for parking; the administration should clear all such encroachments and make these spaces available for parking."

Ajay Bhosale, a resident of Shukrawar Peth, noted that parking has been a major challenge in market areas, yet there has been very little progress on developing new lots. Bhosale pointed out that the PMC has already sanctioned a parking policy focusing on imposing charges for roadside parking and developing new parking lots. However, he emphasized that nothing substantial has happened on either front.

Proposed Solutions and Public Concern

Sachin Kulkarni, a postgraduate student, suggested, "It is possible to develop multi-storey parking lots to limit roadside parking. The situation in Pune is worrisome as it has a significant population of vehicles." The article also includes references to local rates and holidays, but the core issue remains the need for efficient parking management and infrastructure development in Pune.
