Panic Fuel Buying Sweeps Mumbai Metropolitan Region Amid Payment System Transition
Amid scenes of panic buying at petrol pumps across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), particularly in Thane and Navi Mumbai, sources within major oil companies have categorically stated on Thursday that there is no actual shortage of fuel supply. The sudden rush and temporary closures at some stations have been attributed to operational challenges linked to a recent shift in payment protocols rather than any deficit in petroleum products.
Advance Payment System Creates Operational Hurdles
Government sources have clarified that a few petrol pumps are experiencing difficulties due to the implementation of an advance payment system. Under this new arrangement, dealers have ceased offering credit facilities, mandating that fuel stations make payments a full day in advance to receive their stock deliveries. This financial requirement has left some outlets struggling to maintain their inventories.
Kishore Vichare, who operates fuel stations in Koparkhairane and Mahape, explained the situation succinctly: "Dealers have stopped giving credit, and fuel stock is only delivered after payment is made a day in advance. Fuel stations that are unable to make this advance payment are nearly running dry." This shift has inadvertently triggered a chain reaction of anxiety among motorists, leading to the widespread panic buying observed across the region.
Widespread Panic Buying Across Key Locations
On Thursday, long queues and frantic purchasing were reported at numerous petrol pumps in Kalyan, Badlapur, various parts of Thane, Koparkhairne, Vashi, Belapur in Navi Mumbai, and even sections of Mumbai itself. In Thane, two out of eighteen fuel stations witnessed a near shutdown as drivers flocked to fill their tanks, anticipating a potential shortage. The situation was similarly tense in Badlapur, where a private Nayara petrol pump remained closed, with staff citing an alleged "fuel shortage" as the reason.
Another Nayara petrol pump in Kalyan was also found shut, further fueling public concerns. However, Ganesh Lamture, who operates a Nayara franchise, provided clarification, noting that while supply is indeed arriving, it is now on an alternate-day basis due to the new payment structure. This intermittent delivery schedule has contributed to the perception of scarcity among consumers.
No Actual Shortage, Just Procedural Adjustments
Despite the visible chaos, oil company insiders have reassured the public that there is no genuine shortage of petrol or diesel. The root cause lies squarely in the transitional phase of the advance payment system, which has temporarily disrupted the seamless flow of fuel to some retail outlets. Authorities are urging calm and advising motorists to avoid hoarding, as the supply chain remains intact and fully capable of meeting the region's fuel demands.
The incident underscores the delicate balance between financial procedures and public perception in critical sectors like fuel distribution. As the system stabilizes, normalcy is expected to return swiftly to petrol pumps across the MMR.
