The Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (Nites), a prominent body representing IT sector workers, has formally approached Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya with a critical demand. The organization is seeking an immediate and thorough audit of compliance with the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act at a Nashik-based information technology company. This urgent request follows serious complaints lodged by multiple women employees with local police, alleging incidents of sexual harassment and workplace coercion.

Scope of the Requested Investigation

In its detailed letter to the ministry, Nites has outlined several key areas requiring examination. The forum has called for a complete review of all sexual harassment complaints received by the company over the past several years, including those currently pending and those previously resolved. The audit must assess the specific actions taken by the organization in response to each complaint and evaluate the overall effectiveness of their grievance redressal mechanisms.

Furthermore, Nites has emphasized the need to scrutinize the role and accountability of human resources personnel and senior management in properly handling complaints and ensuring a genuinely safe working environment for all employees. The letter specifically requests verification of whether any employees were discouraged from reporting incidents or faced retaliation for coming forward with their concerns.

Beyond the immediate case, Nites has advocated for a wider, state-level audit of POSH Act compliance across all information technology companies operating within Maharashtra. This broader initiative aims to ensure systemic workplace safety and prevent similar failures in other organizations.

The forum has also urged inspection of existing grievance committees and their operational effectiveness. "The ministry should consider audit of working conditions, including working hours, overtime practices, shift policies and their impact on employee health and well being," the communication stated, highlighting concerns beyond immediate harassment issues.

Company Response and Employee Body's Stance

In response to media queries, the Nashik IT firm issued a statement affirming its "long-standing zero-tolerance policy towards harassment and coercion of any form." The company asserted, "We have always ensured the highest standards of safety and wellbeing of our employees at the workplace. We took swift action as soon as we were made aware of the matter in Nashik. The employees being investigated have been suspended pending enquiry."

However, Nites President Harpreet Singh Saluja maintained a firm position, stating, "The allegations made by multiple women employees are extremely serious and reflect not just individual misconduct, but a complete failure of workplace safeguards and accountability within the organisation. No employee should have to endure such humiliation, fear and exploitation at their place of work."

Call for Systemic Reforms

The employee body has proposed significant structural reforms to prevent future incidents. Nites has urged the government to consider implementing periodic mandatory audits and standardized reporting requirements specifically for IT sector companies.
