FASTag Non-Payment Leads to Service Suspension on National Highways
FASTag Non-Payment Leads to Service Suspension on NHs

New Delhi: Non-payment of toll through your FASTag at barrier-less toll plazas on the country's National Highway (NH) network will lead not only to the issuance of an e-Notice but also to the suspension of all FASTag services for the said vehicle until pending e-Notice dues are cleared, according to the government's FAQs on the new tolling system.

Details of the New Tolling System

This process will be implemented as per the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) FASTag programme procedure, as stated in a road transport ministry's NH fee notice. The suspension of services will encompass all FASTag facilities, including NH fee plazas, state toll plazas, and parking plazas.

An NHAI official clarified that this measure is already in effect if a FASTag is hotlisted for any reason. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has urged highway users to maintain sufficient balance in their FASTag accounts to avoid such penalties.

Consequences of Insufficient Balance or Invalid FASTag

In scenarios such as insufficient FASTag balance, or an invalid or non-functional FASTag, users will receive an e-Notice and will be required to pay the normal user fee within 72 hours. Failure to comply within this period will result in the user fee being doubled for the vehicle category.

Long-Term Non-Compliance Penalties

If an e-Notice remains unpaid beyond 15 days, services linked with Vahan — including No Objection Certificate (NOC), transfer of ownership, national permit, and fitness certificate — will be restricted until the outstanding dues are cleared.

This initiative aims to ensure smooth toll collection and reduce congestion at toll plazas. Highway users are advised to regularly check their FASTag balance and ensure proper functionality to avoid disruptions in services.
