The Indian Army has initiated the procurement process for 159 modern bullet-proof troop carriers (BPTCs) to be deployed with Rashtriya Rifles battalions, sector headquarters, and force headquarters in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. This move aims to enhance protected mobility for soldiers operating in challenging and hilly terrains.
Procurement Details
The Army has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to identify Indian vendors capable of undertaking the project and delivering the BPTCs. The contract requires a minimum delivery of 60 units per year post-signing. The Rashtriya Rifles, which primarily handles counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir, currently relies on aging vehicles for troop transportation.
Operational Requirements
The new BPTCs will be used for both administrative and operational tasks, including troop movement and transportation. According to the RFI, the vehicles must provide adequate mobility and protection for onboard personnel. They should also be capable of carrying limited battle loads, including weapons, ammunition, and communication equipment.
Key performance specifications include a road speed of 80-100 kmph and off-road speed of 50-75 kmph. The vehicles must have a range of 350 km on plains and 300 km in mountainous regions. They should operate at altitudes up to 5,000 meters, including snow-bound areas in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, and in temperatures ranging from -10°C to +40°C.
Armament and Indigenous Manufacturing
The BPTCs must provide limited firing capability through firing pods and machine guns mounted on the vehicle hatch. The procurement aligns with the 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiatives, emphasizing indigenous manufacturing and self-reliance in defense production.
