Amazon Announces Major Workforce Reduction of 16,000 Positions Worldwide
E-commerce and technology leader Amazon has officially confirmed plans to eliminate approximately 16,000 jobs across its global operations over the coming three months. This significant workforce reduction comes as part of the company's ongoing organisational restructuring and strategic expansion into artificial intelligence domains.
Restructuring Details and Employee Support Measures
In a detailed blog post published on Wednesday, Beth Galetti, Amazon's Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology, outlined the company's approach to these changes. Employees based in the United States will receive 90 days to explore internal role transitions, accompanied by comprehensive severance packages and additional transitional support services.
"We've been diligently working to strengthen our organisational structure by reducing management layers, increasing individual ownership, and systematically removing bureaucratic obstacles," Galetti explained in her announcement. She further noted that while many teams completed their restructuring processes in October, other divisions are only finalising these organisational changes now.
Context of Previous and Current Layoffs
These newly announced job cuts represent the second substantial round of workforce reductions at Amazon within recent months. The company previously eliminated approximately 14,000 positions earlier this year. When combined with the layoffs implemented in late 2022 and early 2023, which affected about 27,000 employees, Amazon's total workforce reductions now approach significant corporate restructuring levels.
According to Reuters reporting, Amazon has been planning this second phase of layoffs as part of a broader strategic initiative to reduce nearly 30,000 corporate roles throughout the organisation. Despite these reductions, the company maintains that it will continue hiring and investing in what it identifies as key strategic areas essential for future growth.

The initial round of layoffs in October was partially attributed to the increasing integration of artificial intelligence technologies within Amazon's operations. An internal company memo described this generation of AI as "the most transformative technology we've encountered since the Internet," noting that it enables unprecedented innovation velocity.
However, during Amazon's third-quarter earnings discussion with analysts, CEO Andy Jassy provided additional context about the workforce reductions. He clarified that the decisions were "not really financially driven and it's not even really AI-driven" in isolation. Instead, Jassy emphasised that these changes reflect deeper cultural transformations within the organisation as Amazon streamlines operations and repositions itself for future technological leadership.
