The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed that India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) will become operational in Cyprus from next year. This development marks a significant step in enhancing digital payment connectivity between the two nations and is expected to facilitate smoother financial transactions for Indian travelers and businesses in Cyprus.
Expansion of UPI Globally
The announcement comes as part of India's broader efforts to expand the reach of UPI internationally. UPI, which has already been adopted in several countries including Singapore, UAE, and France, is now set to enter the European market through Cyprus. The MEA stated that the integration will allow Indian tourists and expatriates in Cyprus to make payments using their UPI-enabled apps, eliminating the need for currency exchange or carrying multiple cards.
Boosting Bilateral Relations
The move is also expected to strengthen economic ties between India and Cyprus. Cyprus is a key financial hub in the European Union, and the introduction of UPI is likely to promote trade, tourism, and investment. The MEA highlighted that this initiative aligns with the government's vision of promoting digital payments and financial inclusion globally.
Cyprus has a significant Indian diaspora, and the UPI service will provide them with a convenient and secure payment method. Additionally, Cypriot businesses dealing with Indian counterparts will benefit from faster and more transparent transactions.
Technical Implementation
The technical integration will involve collaboration between the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and Cypriot financial institutions. The MEA assured that all necessary security protocols will be in place to ensure safe transactions. The exact launch date and specific merchant categories will be announced closer to the rollout.
This expansion is part of a series of international partnerships for UPI, which has seen rapid adoption due to its ease of use and low transaction costs. The MEA's confirmation underscores India's commitment to making UPI a global payment standard.
