Oman Launches First Polymer 1-Rial Note with Advanced Security Features
Oman's First Polymer Banknote to Circulate from 2026

In a significant move to modernise its currency, Oman has unveiled its first-ever polymer banknote. The Central Bank of Oman announced the new one-rial note, crafted from durable polymer material, which will officially enter circulation on January 11, 2026. This landmark issuance marks a departure from traditional cotton-based notes, promising greater longevity and sophisticated anti-counterfeiting measures.

Design That Celebrates Heritage and Progress

The new banknote, measuring 145 by 76 millimetres, serves as a canvas for Oman's national identity. The front side proudly displays the Oman Botanic Garden, a symbol of the nation's dedication to environmental conservation. Flipping the note reveals a powerful trio: the Sayyid Tariq bin Taimur Cultural Complex alongside the Duqm Port and Refinery. This deliberate design choice seamlessly weaves together Oman's rich cultural legacy with its ambitious vision for economic diversification and growth.

Advanced Security for a Modern Currency

Security has been a paramount concern in the note's development. A standout feature is a large transparent window, its design inspired by the arched windows of the Oman Botanic Garden. This element is both aesthetically pleasing and a robust security layer. The front of the note incorporates a colour-shifting foil depicting the iconic frankincense tree. Furthermore, the Central Bank's logo on the reverse uses iridescent, colour-shifting ink. These advanced features are designed to make replication extremely difficult for counterfeiters, ensuring the integrity of the currency.

Availability and Collectors' Editions

The Central Bank has confirmed that the new polymer one-rial note will co-circulate with the existing paper versions, retaining its status as fully legal tender. For collectors and enthusiasts, the bank will release special limited editions. These will include:

  • 1,000 uncut sheets of the new banknote.
  • 10,000 notes in specially designed packaging.

These collector's items will be available for purchase starting from the launch date, January 11, 2026. They can be acquired at Central Bank counters located in Ruwi, Salalah, and Sohar, as well as through the Oman Post sales outlet at the Opera Galleria.

By adopting polymer technology, Oman joins a growing list of nations seeking more sustainable and secure currency. The new one-rial note is more than just money; it is a durable, high-tech emblem of the Sultanate, reflecting its proud heritage and its dynamic path toward future prosperity.
