Milkfed Punjab, the state's leading dairy cooperative, has announced an increase in the milk procurement price for farmers, effective immediately. The decision aims to provide better returns to dairy farmers amid rising input costs.
New Procurement Rates
Under the revised structure, the price for buffalo milk has been raised by Rs 2 per litre, while cow milk sees an increase of Rs 1 per litre. The new rates are applicable across all Milkfed procurement centers in Punjab.
Impact on Farmers
The move is expected to benefit over 2.5 lakh farmer families associated with Milkfed. Farmers have welcomed the decision, stating it will help offset the rising costs of feed and veterinary care.
Milkfed Managing Director S. K. Sharma stated, "This price revision reflects our commitment to ensuring fair compensation for farmers. We are also exploring additional support measures."
Market Context
The increase comes amid a surge in demand for dairy products and a push for self-sufficiency in milk production. Punjab contributes significantly to the national milk pool, and this hike is seen as a step to sustain production levels.
Milkfed plans to review procurement prices periodically based on market conditions and farmer feedback.
