A 37-year-old labourer was killed in a late-night hit-and-run incident near Vakil Saheb Bridge in Bopal on the Sardar Patel Ring Road in Ahmedabad. The accident occurred on Wednesday when a speeding truck allegedly ran him over while he was crossing the road. The driver fled the scene but later abandoned the vehicle near Ognaj and escaped on foot after being chased by an autorickshaw driver.
Victim Identification
The deceased has been identified as Sukhdev Koted, a native of Rajasthan who lived with his younger brother and family in a labour colony near Ambli-Sarkhej. He worked as a labourer in the area.
FIR Registered
An FIR in the case was registered with M Division traffic police on Thursday following a complaint lodged by the victim's younger brother, Dinesh Koted. According to the complaint, Dinesh received a call from his sister-in-law around 9.30pm informing him that Sukhdev had met with an accident near Vakil Saheb Bridge in Bopal. When he reached the spot near Saraswati Hospital at the southern end of the bridge, he found a crowd gathered around the body.
Sequence of Events
Police said Sukhdev had taken an autorickshaw from Changodar to the bridge, where his 16-year-old son Rahul had come to pick him up. After alighting from the rickshaw, Sukhdev was crossing the road towards the service lane when a speeding truck coming from the Shantipura side allegedly struck him with great force. He died on the spot due to severe injuries.
Eyewitness Account
Eyewitnesses said the truck driver did not stop after the collision and sped towards Ognaj. An autorickshaw driver chased the truck, but the driver abandoned the vehicle near Ognaj and escaped on foot. The police are investigating the case and searching for the accused driver.
