IT Dept Enables Online Filing of ITR-1, ITR-4 for 2026-27

The Income Tax Department has officially enabled the online filing of Income Tax Returns (ITR) for Assessment Year 2026-27. Taxpayers can now file their returns using ITR-1 (Sahaj) and ITR-4 (Sugam) through the e-Filing portal. The announcement was made via a tweet from the official Income Tax India handle on May 15, 2026.

Deadlines for Filing

Individual taxpayers filing ITR-1 must submit their returns by July 31, 2026. For non-audit taxpayers opting for ITR-4, the deadline is August 31, 2026. These dates are crucial to avoid any late filing penalties.

How to File

Taxpayers can access the Excel utility or use the online filing option directly on the e-Filing portal. The process is designed to be user-friendly, with step-by-step guidance available. It is advisable to gather all necessary documents, such as Form 16, bank statements, and investment proofs, before starting the filing process.

  • ITR-4 (Sugam): For individuals, HUFs, and firms with presumptive income from business or profession.

Important Points to Remember

Ensure that all income details are accurately reported. Cross-check with Form 26AS and AIS (Annual Information Statement) to avoid discrepancies. Late filing may attract a fee under Section 234F. For any queries, taxpayers can reach out to the helpdesk on the e-Filing portal.
