Bank Holiday Alert: Branches Closed in 9 States on Jan 1, 2026 for New Year & Gaan-Ngai
Bank Holiday Jan 1, 2026: Branches Closed in 9 States

As India welcomes the dawn of 2026, customers are checking the operational status of their banks on Thursday, January 1. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has declared a bank holiday in several states to mark New Year's Day and regional festivals, including the traditional Gaan-Ngai celebration. While physical branches will be shut in specific regions, digital financial services will ensure uninterrupted access for most banking needs.

State-Wise Bank Closures on New Year's Day

According to the central bank's official calendar, bank branches will remain closed in nine states on the first day of the year. These states are Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Tripura, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland. In all other parts of the country, banks are scheduled to function normally, allowing customers to visit branches for their transactions.

Understanding the Gaan-Ngai Festival

The holiday in several northeastern states coincides with Gaan-Ngai, a significant post-harvest festival. Primarily observed by the Zeliangrong Naga tribes—encompassing the Zeme, Liangmai, and Rongmei communities—this festival is celebrated in parts of Manipur, Nagaland, and Assam. It typically falls in late December or early January, symbolizing the conclusion of the agricultural cycle and the ushering in of a new beginning.

Digital Banking to the Rescue

Customers in states with bank holidays need not worry about a complete financial standstill. The RBI has confirmed that digital banking channels will operate without any disruption. Services such as Unified Payments Interface (UPI), internet banking, mobile banking applications, and ATMs will be fully functional. This allows users to transfer funds, pay bills, and check balances seamlessly.

However, services that require physical branch intervention will be paused for the day. These include cash deposits over the counter, passbook updates, cheque clearance, and any documentation-related work like loan processing. These services will resume on the next working day.

Planning Ahead for January 2026

The RBI's comprehensive holiday calendar for 2026 lists numerous closures throughout the year, with over 100 holidays nationally when considering all states. For January alone, banks across different regions may observe up to 16 holidays, though these are not uniform across the country. The holidays are determined by a mix of national events, religious observances, and local cultural festivals.

Key national holidays for January 2026, as per the RBI list, include:

  • 1 January: New Year's Day / Gaan-Ngai
  • 2 January: New Year Celebration / Mannam Jayanthi
  • 12 January: Birthday of Swami Vivekananda
  • 14 January: Makar Sankranti / Magh Bihu
  • 26 January: Republic Day

It is crucial for customers to remember that, apart from these notified holidays, banks are closed every Sunday and on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. Staying informed about your state's specific holiday schedule can help in planning important financial visits and avoiding last-minute inconveniences.
