In a significant development for India's financial capital, Adani Electricity Mumbai Infrastructure Limited (AEMIL), a subsidiary of Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL), announced on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, the commissioning of a crucial 1,000 megawatt high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission link connecting Kudus and Aarey. This strategic infrastructure project is designed to substantially strengthen the power grid serving Mumbai and the expansive Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Enhancing Grid Resilience and Renewable Integration

The newly operational Kudus-Aarey link represents a transformative step in securing Mumbai's energy future. A senior company official emphasized that the project enables a greater influx of electricity from outside the city, including a significant boost in the integration of renewable energy generated in other regions. While Mumbai was previously connected to the national grid, this advanced HVDC link facilitates more controlled, efficient, and higher-capacity power flows, specifically optimized for renewable energy sources.

For the MMR, one of India's most energy-intensive urban clusters, the additional 1,000 MW of transmission capacity is pivotal. It will help reduce the region's dependence on in-city power generation, markedly improve overall grid resilience, and lower the risk of large-scale outages that could disrupt economic activity.

The project was conceived in direct response to the vulnerabilities exposed by the major October 2020 Mumbai blackout. It reflects a broader, concerted push to enhance grid resilience and reliability against future disruptions. The link itself is an engineering feat, comprising a 30-kilometer overhead line and a 50-kilometer underground corridor, meticulously designed to operate within the constraints of Mumbai's densely built urban environment.

Notably, the substation features the world's first compact HVDC design, specifically suited for dense urban landscapes. The system also delivers substantial operational benefits, including dynamic voltage support, reduced transmission losses over long distances, and black-start capability. This latter feature allows for power restoration without relying on an external source, enabling quicker recovery in the event of any outages.

Leadership Hails a Milestone for Mumbai's Energy Security

Kandarp Patel, CEO of Adani Energy Solutions Ltd, hailed the commissioning as a landmark achievement. "With the commissioning of the Aarey-Kudus transmission line, Mumbai now has a modern power corridor capable of integrating large-scale renewable energy with high reliability," Patel stated. "It is one of the fastest HVDC projects ever commissioned, powered by advanced Voltage Source Converter (VSC)-based HVDC technology. The project enhances grid stability, decongests existing networks, and strengthens the city's energy security. This marks a significant step towards a cleaner, more resilient energy future for Mumbai."
