Trump Administration Expands Immigration Focus to Naturalized Citizens
Following its crackdown on illegal immigrants, the Donald Trump administration is now setting its sights on a new target group: legal immigrants who were not born on US soil. This initiative specifically targets naturalized citizens, excluding visa holders and Green Card holders, as part of a broader effort to scrutinize the integrity of the immigration system.
USCIS Silent Push for Denaturalization Cases
According to a report by NBC News, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has been quietly working on this plan for several months. The agency has deployed experts to its offices nationwide to identify citizens who may have obtained naturalization through fraudulent means, with the goal of potentially stripping them of their citizenship.
The objective is to supply the office of immigration litigation with 100 to 200 possible denaturalization cases per month, as revealed by a source familiar with the plans. This marks a significant escalation, given that denaturalization cases are typically rare and only occur when individuals are found to have concealed criminal histories or other critical information during their citizenship application process.
Aggressive Push Compared to Previous Term
In President Trump's first term, a total of 102 denaturalization cases were reported, highlighting the rarity of such proceedings. The new target of 100-200 cases monthly represents an aggressive push by the administration, which critics argue is aimed at reducing the immigrant population in the country.
USCIS spokesperson Matthew Tragesser emphasized the agency's commitment to integrity, stating, "We maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards fraud in the naturalization process and will pursue denaturalization proceedings for any individual who lied or misrepresented themselves." He added, "We will continue to relentlessly pursue those undermining the integrity of America’s immigration system and work alongside the Department of Justice to ensure that only those who meet citizenship standards retain the privilege of US citizenship."
Understanding Denaturalization: Grounds and Process
Denaturalization is the legal process by which a government revokes citizenship granted through naturalization. Common grounds for this action include:
- Lying on a naturalization application
- Concealing criminal history
- Hiding past immigration violations
- Using a false identity
If any of these conditions are identified, the US Department of Justice files a civil lawsuit. The government must prove that the individual did not qualify for naturalization due to suppressed facts. If citizenship is revoked, the person typically reverts to their previous immigration status, such as being a Green Card holder. In cases where no valid status exists, deportation may be pursued.
This move underscores the administration's intensified focus on immigration enforcement, raising concerns among immigrant communities and advocates about the potential impact on naturalized citizens who have legally obtained their status.
