Major US Northeast Cities Brace for Weekend Snowfall
Major cities across the US Northeast are preparing for significant snowfall this weekend. The weather system is expected to bring up to 4 inches of snow from Washington DC northward into Maine. This snowfall could help address the region's persistent snow deficit that has lasted for years.
Snowfall Predictions and Patterns
The FOX Forecast Center, cited by the New York Post, predicts these areas will receive 2-4 inches of snow. Some localized areas might experience even higher amounts. Most snowfall will concentrate west of Interstate 95, the major highway running along the East Coast through Washington, New York, and Boston.
As temperatures rise to the mid-to-upper 30s Fahrenheit (approximately 2°C to 4°C) during the day, snow may not last long. At these temperatures, snow often turns to rain quickly. Coastal and eastern regions will likely see snow change to rain. Any snow that falls probably won't settle or remain for long, especially later in the day.
Weather System Movement
By Sunday, the low-pressure area currently forecast to drop snow across Georgia and the Southeast will likely shift into the Northeast. This shift will bring snow chances from the Mid-Atlantic into New England. Major Northeast cities including Philadelphia, Boston, and New York could receive several inches of snow by Sunday afternoon.
The FOX Forecast Center notes the low-pressure area is moving closer to the East Coast than originally predicted. This movement could mean heavier snow from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania up through Maine. However, the weather agency emphasizes it's too early to determine exact snowfall amounts for these areas.
The system is expected to move slightly slower than forecasted. Snow will likely begin during morning hours from Virginia up through the Tri-State area. From there, snow will spread into Rhode Island and Massachusetts by afternoon. By Monday morning, snowfall should wrap up as the system moves off into the Canadian Maritimes.
Addressing the Snow Deficit
This snowfall offers an opportunity for major cities in the region to reduce their five-year snow deficit. Since 2021, Washington DC has recorded 25 inches below average snowfall. New York City shows almost 70 inches below average. Boston leads with 103 inches less snow than average over this period.
The weekend snow could provide some relief from this deficit, though significant accumulation would be needed to make substantial progress. Residents across the Northeast should prepare for potential travel disruptions and changing weather conditions throughout the weekend.
