US Military Intercepts Sanctioned Oil Tanker in Indian Ocean Operation
In a significant maritime enforcement action, US military forces boarded the sanctioned oil tanker Veronica III in the Indian Ocean on Sunday. This operation followed an extensive tracking effort that originated in the Caribbean Sea, as part of ongoing initiatives to disrupt illicit oil shipments associated with Venezuela.
Details of the Maritime Interdiction
According to the US Department of Defense, the operation was conducted overnight within the INDOPACOM area of responsibility. The Veronica III, a Panamanian-flagged vessel under US sanctions related to Iran, was intercepted after a long-distance pursuit. The Pentagon shared a post on X, stating, "We defend the Homeland forward. Distance does not protect you." Accompanying the message was a video showing US troops boarding the tanker without incident.
The defense department elaborated that the vessel had attempted to evade enforcement measures ordered by former President Donald Trump. "The vessel tried to defy President Trump’s quarantine—hoping to slip away. We tracked it from the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean, closed the distance, and shut it down. No other nation has the reach, endurance, or will to do this," the statement emphasized.
Broader Warning and Context
Issuing a stern warning, the department added, "International waters are not sanctuary. By land, air, or sea, we will find you and deliver justice. The Department of War will deny illicit actors and their proxies freedom of movement in the maritime domain." This action aligns with US sanctions on Venezuela's oil sector, which have been in place for several years. Venezuela has relied on a shadow fleet of falsely flagged tankers to transport crude oil into global supply chains.
In December, President Trump ordered a quarantine of sanctioned tankers to increase pressure on then-President Nicolás Maduro, who was later apprehended in January during an American military operation. The Trump administration has been seizing tankers as part of broader efforts to control Venezuela's oil flows.
Recent Similar Operations
This incident follows a similar operation last week, where US forces boarded another tanker, the Aquila II, in the Indian Ocean. A defense official noted that the ship is being held while US authorities determine its ultimate fate. These actions underscore the US military's commitment to enforcing sanctions and disrupting illegal maritime activities in key regions.
The ongoing efforts highlight the strategic importance of maritime security and the challenges posed by illicit oil shipments. As global tensions persist, such operations are likely to continue as part of US policy to curb unauthorized trade and uphold international regulations.
