Former President Donald Trump has laid out an ambitious and wide-ranging blueprint for commemorating the United States' 250th anniversary in 2026. The plans, announced under the banner of a new organisation named Freedom 250, aim to orchestrate a historic, nationwide celebration involving federal, state, corporate, and civic participation.
A Nationwide Celebration Takes Shape
In a video message released from the Oval Office, Trump stated that the initiative seeks to reignite national pride and set a foundation for the future. "We will renew the patriotism, pride and pioneering spirit of America and lay the groundwork for the next 250 years of independence and freedom," he declared. The non-partisan entity, Freedom 250, will be led by its Chief Executive, Keith Krach, a former under secretary of state and businessman. Krach affirmed the goal is to realise Trump's vision for an unprecedented national observance.
The commemorative year will officially commence on New Year's Eve 2025, with the Washington Monument being illuminated nightly through January 5, 2026. This will be followed by a National Prayer Event on the National Mall next spring, which Trump said would rededicate the nation.
Spectacular Events and Unconventional Plans
The calendar of events is designed to be both traditional and strikingly novel. Key highlights include:
- Memorial Day 'Spirit of America' Parade: A parade in Washington, D.C., to honour fallen U.S. service members.
- UFC Fight at the White House: Perhaps the most unconventional event, a UFC fight is scheduled for June 14 (Flag Day and Trump's 80th birthday) at the White House, organised by UFC CEO Dana White featuring top global fighters.
- Great American State Fair: From June 25 to July 10, the National Mall will host a fair with pavilions for all 50 states.
- Fourth of July 'Salute to America': The pinnacle of celebrations on Independence Day will feature a major presidential address, a large military flyover, and what is promised to be the world's largest fireworks display.
- Patriot Games: A four-day athletic competition in D.C. for high school athletes, with one male and one female participant from each state and territory.
Lasting Legacy and Future Announcements
Beyond the events, Trump highlighted legacy projects, including plans to build a new triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery and a statue garden celebrating American heroes. Construction on the arch is slated to begin soon.
Trump indicated that more events will be announced as 2026 approaches. The Freedom 250 celebrations will run alongside other observances organised by the bipartisan America250 commission and institutions like the Smithsonian. The U.S. will officially mark its sestercentennial on July 4, 2026, a milestone Trump promises will be celebrated with "the most spectacular birthday party the world has ever seen."
