Trump Alerts Nation to Iranian Sleeper Cells During Ongoing Conflict
US President Donald Trump declared on Wednesday that American authorities are fully aware of Iranian sleeper cells operating inside the country. This statement comes as US and Israeli military forces continue their joint operation against Iran, now entering its second consequential week.
Military Operation Claims Iran's Supreme Leader
The ongoing military campaign has resulted in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This significant event has triggered retaliatory actions by Iran targeting US assets and allied interests across the region. President Trump described the military efforts as being conducted "at a level that nobody's seen before," adding that it was "pretty amazing to watch."
Trump Blames Biden's Border Policies for Security Threats
When questioned by a Fox News reporter regarding intelligence briefings on the number of potential sleeper cells, Trump responded pointedly. "I have been, and a lot of people came in through Biden with his stupid open border, but we know where most of them are. We've got our eye on all of them, I think," he stated.
The President further criticized his predecessor, Joe Biden, calling him "one of the worst presidents in the history of our country" and attributing the entry of potential threats to alleged lax border policies during the previous administration.
Encrypted Communications and Federal Alerts
Earlier reports from ABC News indicated that US authorities successfully intercepted encrypted communications believed to originate from Iran. These transmissions were intended for clandestine recipients within the United States.
A federal alert issued to law enforcement agencies acknowledged that while the exact contents remain undetermined, the situation warrants increased vigilance. "While the exact contents of these transmissions cannot currently be determined, the sudden appearance of a new station with international rebroadcast characteristics warrants heightened situational awareness," the alert emphasized.
Recent Incidents and Security Measures
Since Khamenei's death, several concerning incidents have occurred on US soil:
- A Senegalese man opened fire at a bar in Austin, Texas, resulting in three fatalities.
- Two individuals were charged with attempting to support ISIS during protests outside New York City's Gracie Mansion, the official residence of Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Customs and Border Protection had previously warned about sleeper cell risks, noting that over 700 Iranian nationals remained in the US after crossing the border illegally in the past four years.
FBI Director Confirms Heightened Alert Status
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that counterterrorism teams are operating on high alert around the clock to prevent threats. "Last night, I instructed our counterterrorism and intelligence teams to be on high alert and mobilise all assisting security assets needed," Patel announced on social media platform X shortly after the military operation commenced.
The convergence of military action abroad and domestic security concerns underscores the complex challenges facing US authorities during this volatile period in Middle Eastern relations.
