US President Donald Trump on Tuesday called on Iran to "wave the white flag" of surrender, escalating his rhetoric amid heightened tensions between the two nations. In a series of tweets, Trump stated that Iran must seek a ceasefire and negotiate a peace agreement, warning that the United States is prepared to take further military action if necessary.
Trump's Call for Surrender
"To the leaders of Iran: Do not kill your protesters. The world is watching. Instead, wave the white flag of surrender and make a deal," Trump wrote. He added that the US has "powerful military options" and is ready to use them. The comments come days after a US drone strike killed Major General Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran's Quds Force, in Baghdad.
Iran's Response
Iranian officials have rejected Trump's demands, vowing retaliation for Soleimani's death. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared that Iran will continue to resist US aggression. The Iranian parliament also designated all US military forces as terrorists, escalating the conflict.
International Concerns
The escalating rhetoric has drawn concern from world leaders, who urge restraint. The United Nations called for de-escalation, while European allies sought to mediate. The situation remains volatile, with both sides signaling readiness for further confrontation.
Trump's statement marks a significant departure from previous US policy, which sought to contain Iran through sanctions and diplomacy. The shift toward direct military confrontation has raised fears of a broader war in the Middle East.
