Sikh Nurse Hospitalized After Alleged Racist Assault in Australian Gym Attack
A 22-year-old Sikh nurse from India has been left with severe emotional trauma and a broken nose following an alleged racially motivated physical assault outside a gym in the Corio suburb of Geelong, Australia. The victim, Harmanpreet Singh, described the harrowing incident that occurred late on Tuesday night, casting a spotlight on growing safety concerns within the Indian diaspora community.
Violent Confrontation Following Gym Session
According to Singh's detailed account to Australian broadcaster 9News, the disturbing episode began while he was completing his workout at a local fitness facility. The situation escalated dramatically when he exited the gym, where three men were allegedly waiting for him outside. In a moment of shocking violence, one of the assailants approached Singh closely before headbutting him directly in the face.
"He got really close to my face and then just got really back and hit his head on my nose. And just started bleeding straight away," Singh recounted, describing the immediate aftermath of the brutal impact. Video footage obtained by 9News reportedly captured one of the attackers shouting racially charged abuse, including the phrases "Wanna mouth off, you Indian dog?" and "go back to where you came from."
Medical Aftermath and Psychological Impact
The three alleged perpetrators fled the scene in a sedan immediately after the assault, leaving Singh bleeding profusely from his nasal injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he spent the entire night under close medical supervision. Doctors have indicated that his injuries may require specialized consultation and potential surgical intervention to address the damage to his nasal structure.
Beyond the physical harm, Singh emphasized the profound psychological toll of the attack. "Nobody wants to hear it… especially when you're just minding your own business," he told reporters. "Anyone would be hurt. I'm still traumatised." The young healthcare professional revealed that this was not his first experience with racial abuse in Australia, but described this particular incident as especially distressing and violent.
Safety Concerns and Community Anxiety
The assault has fundamentally shaken Singh's sense of security in his adopted country. "I don't know if I'm going to go back to the gym… I'm not going to feel safe after this," he admitted, highlighting how the attack has impacted his daily routines and personal freedom. His experience reflects broader anxieties within Australia's Indian community, which numbers over 840,000 people as of mid-2023 and represents one of the nation's largest migrant groups.
This incident occurs against a troubling backdrop of increasing racist attacks targeting Indian nationals across Australia. Community leaders and advocacy groups have noted a concerning escalation in both verbal abuse and physical violence following anti-immigration protests that swept through parts of the country last year.
Pattern of Attacks Against Indian Community
Recent years have witnessed multiple high-profile cases of alleged racially motivated violence against Indian migrants and students. In July 2025, a 23-year-old Indian student named Amanpreet Singh was hospitalized with serious injuries including facial fractures and brain trauma after being attacked by five men armed with metal knuckles or sharp objects in central Adelaide. According to reports from The Australia Today, the assault left him unconscious and required extensive medical treatment.
Additionally, there have been disturbing instances of vandalism targeting Hindu temples and other places of worship frequented by the Indian community. The Shree Swaminarayan Hindu temple in Melbourne experienced such vandalism, further amplifying concerns about religious intolerance and ethnic targeting. These incidents collectively contribute to a climate of apprehension among many Indian Australians who worry about their safety and acceptance in the country.
Community organizations are calling for stronger measures to address hate crimes and ensure the protection of all migrant communities. The attack on Harmanpreet Singh serves as a painful reminder of the work still needed to combat racism and promote genuine multicultural harmony in Australian society.
