He vowed to prevent similar operations from occurring in New York City, emphasizing that these raids "do nothing to serve the interests of public safety." Mamdani's comments highlight a growing tension between state and federal authorities over immigration policies.

The mayor's statements coincided with tens of thousands of Americans protesting immigration enforcement violence. Alex Pretti was shot and killed by a Border Patrol agent on January 24 after confronting immigration authorities. "We know the fear that so many are living with in Minneapolis. It's a fear that New Yorkers are also living with—a fear of being terrorised," Mamdani stated, pledging to use all available tools, including legal action, to challenge such operations in New York City.
