A 42-year-old Indian-origin man in Canada is facing a slew of serious charges following a dramatic police chase involving a stolen truck, which has further spotlighted the ongoing scrutiny of truck drivers of Indian descent in North America.
The Incident and Arrest
According to the Peel Regional Police, the incident unfolded on December 22. Officers located a truck driven by Nirmal Singh and attempted to pull it over. The police had reason to believe the vehicle was stolen; a day earlier, on December 21, a semi-trailer truck had been reported stolen from a repair shop in the East Drive and Torbram Road area of Brampton.
Instead of stopping, Singh allegedly failed to comply and struck a police cruiser, causing extensive damage to the vehicle. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the collision. The stolen truck continued until it became inoperable, at which point Singh attempted to flee the scene on foot. A foot chase ensued, leading to his eventual arrest.
A Cascade of Criminal Discoveries
The investigation took further turns after the arrest. Police discovered that attached to the stolen truck was a trailer that had also been reported stolen from the Halton Region during the weekend of December 20. Furthermore, a records check revealed that Nirmal Singh was a Canada-wide suspended driver, meaning his license was invalid across the country.
As a result, Singh now faces a long list of charges, including:
- Possession of property obtained by crime (five counts)
- Flight from police
- Dangerous operation of a conveyance
- Possession of break-in instruments
- Possession of an automobile master key (three counts)
Following the discovery of his suspended status, he was additionally charged with eight counts of operating a vehicle while prohibited. Singh was held for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.
