Tragic End for Ludhiana Student in Ukraine War
The family of Samarjeet Singh from Ludhiana sent their son to Russia in 2025 with dreams of a brighter future through higher education and better employment opportunities. Instead, they received him back in a coffin, dressed in a foreign military uniform, with no clear explanation of how he died or why he was involved in the conflict.
Lost Contact and Desperate Pleas
After Samarjeet moved to Russia, his family lost all communication with him in September. For months, his relatives made frantic appeals to Indian government agencies and the Ministry of External Affairs, seeking help to locate him. Their efforts, however, yielded little support or information.
"We tried everything but nobody supported us when we needed it most," said his father, Charanjeet Singh, expressing the family's anguish. "Now all we have is his uniform, a death certificate, and documents in Russian that we cannot even read."
Official Confirmation of Death
The family's worst fears were confirmed on Wednesday when Russian officials notified them that Samarjeet had been killed in the Ukraine war. His remains were subsequently sent to Delhi, leaving his loved ones grappling with grief and unanswered questions.
This incident highlights the dangers faced by Indian nationals abroad, particularly in conflict zones, and raises concerns about the support systems available to families in such crises.
