Indian National in ICE Custody After Fatal Indiana Truck Crash
Sukhdeep Singh, a 25-year-old Indian man, has been arrested and taken into Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody after his truck caused a three-vehicle collision that resulted in the death of a 64-year-old man in Indiana. The incident has sparked significant outrage, as Singh was found to be living in the state illegally and had a history of traffic violations.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The crash occurred on Wednesday, February 18, at the intersection of US 36 and County Road 525 East. Singh was driving a Freightliner semi-truck with a trailer when he ran a red light, striking a Chevrolet. The impact caused the Chevrolet to collide with a Chrysler in the left turn lane. The occupant of the Chevrolet, identified as 64-year-old Terry Schultz, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Singh's Background and Legal Status
According to reports, Singh has been residing in Indiana illegally. He was previously caught at the border in 2018 during the Trump administration when he was a minor but was released. He was formally living in New York and, as of January this year, had moved to New Palestine, Indiana. His presence in the U.S. without legal authorization has raised questions about immigration enforcement.
Traffic Violation History
Fox anchor Angela Ganote highlighted Singh's extensive driving record, noting that he had five citations since 2022. These include:
- A ticket for not having insurance after a car crash on January 8 on Harding Street.
- Three previous speeding tickets for traveling 89 mph in a 70 mph zone, 76 mph in a 55 mph zone, and 74 mph in a 55 mph zone.
- A citation for no registration.
Ganote expressed concerns about how Singh obtained a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) in Indiana despite this history, stating, "We don't yet know the answer." She described him as a repeat offender, emphasizing the fatal crash as the latest in a series of incidents.
Public and Media Reaction
The case has drawn attention due to the combination of illegal immigration and public safety issues. Many are questioning the effectiveness of traffic and immigration laws, particularly in light of Singh's prior encounters with authorities. The incident underscores broader debates about border security and driver accountability in the United States.
As investigations continue, Singh remains in ICE custody, facing potential deportation proceedings in addition to legal charges related to the fatal crash. The community mourns the loss of Terry Schultz while authorities work to address the circumstances that led to this tragedy.
