Doon Medical College Takes Strict Action Against Ragging Incident
Dehradun witnessed a strong response from Doon Medical College authorities this Monday. The college's anti-ragging committee provisionally suspended two MBBS students. This action came after the committee found them guilty of ragging two first-year students at the hostel.
Complaint Details Harsh Treatment
A first-year student filed a formal complaint about the incident. He alleged that seniors tortured him and beat him with a belt and slippers. The distressing event reportedly occurred on January 12. The student submitted his complaint directly to the hostel warden.
The college issued an official order announcing disciplinary measures. The order targets two students from the 2023 and 2024 batches. Penalties include expulsion from the hostel for the entire MBBS course and internship period. Authorities also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on each student. Additionally, they face suspension from academic classes for two months.
Broader Committee Recommendations
The anti-ragging committee did not stop with just two students. They recommended further actions against other individuals involved. The committee suggested expelling four students from the 2023 batch from the men's hostel. They also recommended expelling three students from the 2024 batch. These expulsions would last for three months.
All these students would also face suspension from academic classes for one month. The committee submitted its comprehensive report to principal Dr Geeta Jain on Monday.
Victim's Account Reveals Fear and Pain
One of the ragged students belongs to a minority community. He provided detailed statements in his complaint. The student stated that two seniors beat him with a belt and slippers. They tortured him outside the college campus. The seniors forced him to trim his hair against his will.
The victim expressed his current state clearly. He said the incident left him in great physical pain. He also admitted feeling extremely scared following the assault.
History of Similar Incidents
Doon Medical College has faced ragging allegations before. In September 2023, the college suspended an intern doctor and seven senior students. This action followed a junior student's complaint about being beaten.
Another incident occurred in November 2019. At that time, six students received suspensions. The suspensions came after a formal harassment complaint. These past events show ragging remains a persistent issue at the institution.
The college's latest actions demonstrate their ongoing commitment to addressing this serious problem. They continue to enforce strict anti-ragging policies to protect students.
